JA in a Day

Friday, 29 January, 2010

On Wednesday, January 27th, a small group of Switchonians, representing both our South Sixth office and our Manchester lair, partnered up with Junior Achievement Mississippi Valley to teach the “JA in a day” program to the students at Nance Elementary School in St Louis on Riverview Drive. This was a great opportunity for us to show one of our major clients that, not only do we enjoy the chance to work with them as a vendor, but that we appreciate what their mission is, and want to support that mission first hand.

This partnership, initiated and executed by our President, John “Mr. Kotter” Nickel, and Gerri “Edna Krabappel“ Lashley, has volunteers teach different levels of the JA program to grades 1 through 6. Although the grade 6 students were spared the ham-handed teaching techniques of our people that particular day, the other students were happy to see us, and welcomed us enthusiastically. The teachers were also very helpful and gracious, and worked with our fledgling instructors to help us present a memorable and important curriculum.

It was an eye opening experience on several levels: seeing what a St Louis Public school teacher goes through in a day, a more in-depth understanding of what Junior Achievement does for kids, and realizing that fear of public speaking does not depend on the age of your listeners. Hopefully, the Nance Knights and JA will invite us back. Thank you, Fancheon, for getting us involved in this wonderful and worthwhile endeavor!

speaking of Eduardo…

Thursday, 28 January, 2010

…saw this come across my machine this morning from Cool Hunting.

The shot comes from a series of photographs from local photographer Brandon Voges, who had his subjects…in this instance, Eduardo, hang upside-down.  As the Cool Hunting article says…simple and surprisingly interesting.  I had the pleasure of working with Brandon last week on a shoot for Budweiser & Kasey Kahne.  He works out of Bruton Strobe Studios, and comes highly recommended.

As for this shot of Eduardo…well…I think Eddie has a brighter future behind the camera than in front of it…

Big Shark’s Big Design

Wednesday, 27 January, 2010

Switch’s Senior Creative Director, Eduardo Nieuwenhuyzen, recently designed the Michelob Ultra Big Shark Team Jersey, Big Shark’s Off-Road (mountain biking and cycle-cross) jersey, their Junior National Jersey, and their Tri-athlete Team gear.

As a present for our CEO Mike’s birthday, he was able to negotiate with Big Shark for Switch to get logo placement on all the jerseys.  Yay for Switch branding and our involvement in the cycling and design community!

Click the thumbnails below to see the designs up close and personal…van wrap coming soon!

an apple today keeps the pc at bay

Wednesday, 27 January, 2010

So today is the big day. Steve God Jobs will unveil the tablet. So many questions. So much hype. Will it be the second coming or just the second coming of the Newton? Either way, I think Lee is going to wet himself from the excitement. Tune in here at noon today to find out… about the tablet, not about Lee wetting himself.

dorm room (fine) dinning

Tuesday, 26 January, 2010

last night i attended the seventh installment of Dorm Room Dinner at 33 Wine Shop & Tasting Room. The brainchild of planner-turned-pourer Jeff Stettner, the event invites innovative chefs to prepare and cook a five course meal using only what you’d find in a dorm room.

the guys from Salume Beddu (recently featured in the WSJ) fired up a truly tasty menu that including almond & garlic soup, olive-oil poached tuna, a tortilla espanola (that featured brain of veal…no shiz), beef & chicken tagine and a tasty moroccan doughnut.

jeff usually hosts the events monthly, with seatings at 6PM and 8PM the night of the event.  RSVPs are required…and highly recommended.
